Double-Take:
Colin Clemens (American Teen) Vs. Michael Phelps

[Now Playing: Cool Kids' "Black Mags". Out of this list, I'm probably the most excited to check out their Bake Sale EP. Fuck that political correctness, but I think The Cool Kids should just trade names with The Black Kids!]

It's not evident, especially from this pic, but our boy Colin (a.k.a. "The Jock" from American Teen) has the same unfortch Jay Leno-chin thing goin' on as Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps.

Is it a mere underbite? (IMHO this is waaay worse than the more common, overbite!) Just a case of a freakishly large chin? Or a possible Downs gene? What??!! Can this facial deformity be corrected by a plastic surgeon? Orthodontist? I do not have the answers to these questions.

Anyfrenchbulldog, onto...

American Teen: The Forgotten Midwest

After having watched American Teen, my observations was that everyone with the exception of Hannah ("The Rebel") were losers. And not "losers" in the literal sense in that they wouldn't get anywhere in life, but they were people with no strong sense of self.

Each of the documentary subjects' identity were strongly tied to their specific clique. *** Warning: Spoiler *** For example, at one point, Mitch ("The Hearthrob"/jock) suddenly begins dating Hannah, who is obviously not from the same social circle. Eventually, it doesn't work out (for reasons unknown), and Mitch dumps Hannah via text message. Really shitty, I know.

I couldn't help but think that the main reason was due to their superficial differences. If this is the actual reason, I think it's rather pathetic. Granted, I know nothing about the adolescent pressures of various cliques so it is very difficult for me to wrap my head around this mentality.

Although American Teen didn't delve deep, I felt pity for what I was privy to: Is this a mere reflection of a typical smalltown OR midwest OR American high school? Will anyone develop their own unique identity OR will they just go through life, replacing high school cliques with adult versions? Most importantly, will anyone eventually make it out of Warsaw, IN...and stay out?

I've lost a bit of momentum by taking too much time off this post, but I'm glad that I'm not from/in a smalltown. However, is being from/in a suburb just as bad?

Only time will tell, I suppose.
