Sorrel Drink,
 A More or Less Recipe

(Just remove the ice cubes, serve it hot + in a mug, and add a splash of Jamaican White Rum!)

Very similar to my Korean Cinnamon Tea recipe is Sorrel, a Jamaican beverage made out of hibiscus sepals.  I've seen fresh sorrel once, but most of the time, it comes dry, in a vacuum sealed bag, available at your Caribbean grocery store.  It's the dry version of what you see in the above pic.

You can make it over the stove, but I make mine in the slow cooker.
  • Almost fill your average sized slow cooker with water, approx. 10-12 cups of water
  • add approx. 1 cup of dried sorrel
  • some grated ginger (I used 2 - walnut sized pieces)
  • 2-4 cinnamon sticks (broken up)
  • 1 tsp cloves
  • about a 1/4 of an orange peel
Boil for about an hour. Then add your sugar (to taste) and splash of whatever alcohol you have in your house, re: a splash of cheap wine, sherrie, or rum.

And this is my more or less recipe for Sorrel, a drink that's supposedly good for the Holidays.  After the first time you make it, you adjust to your personal taste.

Try it nuh!
